We all need to have our skills measured, assessed or corroborated by a 3rd party for them to have any value. Learning a skill and keeping it all to ourselves renders our skills valueless. To that end, check out this list of Microsoft Office Skills Checklist. It is helpful.  It is a start.  A checklist of skills is still just a list.  If you're looking for certification, check out this page.  There you will find levels of certification.  That's good to know where you rank against your competition.  Again, this is for Microsoft's Office, which includes Word,Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, One Note, Access, Project, Publisher, Visio, Sway

On driving for Uber, you do have options on leasing a car. Those options are here:
VEHICLE DISCOUNT FINANCINGApply your discount code from the Vehicle Solutions section of your Partner Dashboard. Contact Uber-approved dealerships in your area to select a vehicle.
FLEXIBLE XCHANGE LEASINGContact an Uber-approved lender. The lender will determine how you can finance a car. If you’re approved, our lender will connect you with a local dealership.
VEHICLE RENTALYou can contact an approved rental agency to arrange a weekly rental of a vehicle.
What I need to do is price this out.  Okay, a guy, one Harry Campbell has assembled a list of prices on leasing for Uber and Lyft.
Uber’s Xchange Leasing costs around $120-$180/week, and unlike a regular lease, it includes unlimited mileage and free maintenance.
This is good to know, but where's the phone number for me to confirm or corroborate this?

Okay, so some good accounting here.  There are expenses I will incur on this service:

1.  Rideshare insurance.  How much is that?  Won't know until you pick a car.  Here are some general prices: Geico is $150/year; Erie Insurance, between $9 to $15/month; Allstate is $15 to $20/year (that's quite a difference from Geico; Geico must be a premium insurance); USAA is $6 to $8/month; MetLife, State Farm, & Progressive all depend on miles.

2.  Enterprise Rental Car looks like a key player in this leasing program.  Pricing does seem too cheap:  $215 per week, plus taxes & fees.  Plus, a $250 refundable deposit on the vehicle.  Unlimited mileage.  Hertz is a second reliable option.  Hertz & Enterprise require no credit check and they include insurance.

3.   Uber does offer discounts on certain vehicles.

Apparently, by just going to the page, you automatically apply for creditworthiness.  "Your application is being processed.  We will contact you shortly."  Would be nice if I had timeless proof of this, rather than their ephemeral page that will not refresh if I open this

After driver-partner has passed a screening process, he can consent to the Vehicle Solutions program at driver-partners.uber.com/financing_dash.

Your next step depends on the type of program they select:

- Vehicle Discount: get your discount code from the Vehicle Solutions section of your Partner Dashboard.  Contact an Uber-approved dealership in your area to select a vehicle.

- Flexible Lease: Contact an Uber-approved lender. The Lender will decide whether or not to finance a car for you. If approved, the lender will instruct you on which dealership(s) you should contact.

- Weekly Rental: You can contact an approved rental agency.

You should be looking for work constantly at gig sites, like FreelancerUpwork, Fiverr, and others.  Put in bids.  Bid low.  Get the experience.  Get paid.  This might be just the place for email marketing campaigns.  On email marketing campaign, be sure to check these sites out here, here, and here.

Aspects of email campaigns:
1.  Design.
2.  Generate new customers.
3.  Activate old ones.
4.  Sell discounted items.
5.  Increase sign-ups for membership, conferences, discounts, etc.
6.  Most important metric in email marketing:  delivery rate (% of people who actually received your email.
7.  Open rate.
8.  Click rate on email itself and offers inside email.
9.  Create successful email marketing campaigns.
10.  101 Best email subject lines of 2015.

12.  Sales benefits of Opt-in forms

14.  Bob Bly on email.
15.  Use email to get clients, AWAI.
16.  "What Works Best in Email Marketing: Long or Short Copy," Bob Bly.

Third, and most important, we need to remember that the copy for email marketing campaigns is not wholly contained within the email itself.  It is really in two parts.
The first half of the message is in the actual email.  The email contains a link to a page on a website or server.  When you click on that link, you jump to the page, where the remainder of the message is presented, along with the onilne order mechanism.

In a traditional direct mail package, the message is unevenly split.  Consistently, 98% of the copy is in the letter and brochure, with the remaining 2% on the order form.  In email marketing campaigns, the division is less balanced and more varied.

  2. When they track email metrics, they look at other things beyond open & click rates (like deliverability, bounce rates, throttles, etc.)
  3. They’ve used Marketo, HubSpot, Eloqua [owned by Oracle], Pardot [B2B SalesForce] or the like and not just a front-end like MailChimp, Vertical Response or ConstantContact
  4. They have experience with drip campaigns, know what they are and have set them up (such as nurture, onboarding series [and here], welcome etc)
  5. They know what a “wait step” is in a drip campaign and why it’s sometimes necessary
  6. They know that segmentation [this might be better] is used primarily to promote dynamic content
  7. They know how to read an email header
  8. They know that you shouldn’t use URL shortners in emails otherwise they get flagged as spam
  9. They’re familiar with CAN-SPAM and CASL laws (Canadian Anti-Spam Legislation)
  10. They understand the difference between triggered email and promotional email and know how to use each of them effectively

Not sure if that’s what you were looking for, but hopefully it helps.

  1. They can write well.
  2. They are always learning.
  3. They are interested in data and can run a spreadsheet like a wizard.
  4. They love to test things
  5. They understand human motivations and psychology and are curious as hell.
  6. They think strategically.
  7. They think creatively
  8. They follow rules and break them when appropriate and when they see a calculated opportunity.
  9. They follow trends but are more interested in creating them.
  10. And they are generally insane.
In in terms of concrete skills …
You can be platform agnostic but for the money it's handy to be able to run higher end platforms from hubspot, salesforce, Pardot, Infusionsoft ETC
You should be able to write and deploy a landing page using a product like leadpages
Know the fundamentals in design and strategy around a checkout page.
Understanding technical integrations between platforms is useful.
Understand email marketing legislation in major markets such as CANSPAM in the US.
Knowledge of CSS and HTML is always a bonus.
Understanding how to write good sales copy
And there probably a million more small things but if you have these basics down you are in your way

1.  Here is a Sales & Operations Management Training position with Penske in La Mirada.  Might be worth checking out.  Find out who to contact.

2.  Here is a Web Developer/Designer position out of Norwalk. This position requires experience with Oracle Apex.  APEX stands for Application Express.  That's it.  Experience and knowledge of working with an ITD, Application Development and or an Information Development Team (?) is required.  The company offering the job is SuperTech.  Here are their stated requirements:

a.     Must have a BS degree in one of the following majors:  i) Computer Science, ii) Information Technology, Information Systems, iii) Computer Engineering, iv) Software Engineering, v) Applied Computer Sciences or Informatics.  Provide diploma with resume.

b.  5 years experience within the last 7 years with designing, developing, and implementing custom workflow applications including all aspects of the software development lifecycle: requirements definition, specifications, design, development, integration testing, documentation, user training, implementation, and maintenance.

c.  3 years of experience within the last 5 years in developing web-based applications using Oracle APEX, JavaScript, Oracle application/database architecture and PL/SQL.

d.  3 years experience within the last 5 years with developing self-service applications utilizing BPEL within the Oracle SOA Suite framework.

3.    Technijian from Irvine is advertising for an Entry Level ASP.Net Web Developer.  What is that exactly?
ASP.NET is an open-source server-side web application framework designed for web development to produce dynamic web pages.  It was developed by Microsoft to allow programmers to build dynamic sites, web applications and web services.
Okay, I just downloaded the program ASP.NET, so it is on my computer.  Here are some tutorials: W3Schools, YouTube, from MicroSoft itself @ ASP.NET, and Lynda.com has it all

This next tutorial sounds much better. One, it's delivered by a guy spoken with an American English accent, so that helps. Two, he outlines some prerequisites at the very beginning. Three, it sounds like the video was part of the Lynda.com curriculum. So there's that.

So now you know what ASP.NET is and you've got a few tutorials to keep you busy for at least several weeks.  But as of today, do you possess any of the requirements that Technijian asks for?  Let's take a look:

Responsibilities:
  • Design, create, and modify websites
  • Convert written, graphic, audio, and video components to compatible web formats
  • Create back-end code and interfaces for new web platforms
  • Analyze user needs to implement web site content, graphics, performance, and capacity
  • Integrate web sites with other computer applications
  • Keep up-to-date on web developments and trends
Qualifications:
  • Previous experience in web development or other related fields
  • Familiarity with with HTML, Javascript, or other related languages
  • Strong problem solving and critical thinking skills
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Knowledge of Entity Framework is
an object-relational mapper that enables .NET developers to work with relational data using domain-specific objects. It eliminates the need for most of the data-access code that developers usually need to write.
That's interesting.

In software engineering, multitier architecture (Often referred to as n-tier architecture is a client-server architecture in which presentation, application processing, and data management functions are physically separated.  The most widespread use of multitier architecture is the three-tier architecture.
  • Ability to interact with customers. Providing business solutions that meet our client’s needs
Requirements
  • Firm understanding of web standards and technology
  • Familiarity with Bootstrap framework (see tutorials)
  • Proactive and deadline driven; autonomous worker with ability to be highly team-oriented.
  • Solid understanding of Web technologies including front-end design and working knowledge of back-end development (with tutorials here).
  • Expert hand-code HTML5 (tutorials here and here) with strong CSS3 and JavaScript skills; familiarity with Bootstrap framework.
  • Must be well-versed in Web standard and technologies and able to respond to user experience (UX) feedback.

Roseanne did mention SAP.  What the heck is it?  And who uses it for what? Structure Networks.  Here is a sample job offer.

SAP stands for Systems, Applications, & Products in Data Processing.  Still don't get what that means. But since Roseanne said that networking is huge right now, the following seems accurate:

1. SAP is the 4th largest software company in the world. So it is a software company? Okay. I thought they were systems, applications, and proucts in data processing.
2. The SAP R/3 System is a business software package designed to integrate all areas of business.
3. It provides end to end solutions for financials, manufacturing, logistics, distribution, etc.
4. All business processes are executed in one SAP system and sharing common information with everyone.

SAP [Systems, Applications, & Products] integrates services in these areas:
FICO: Finance & Control
PP: Production Planning
MM: Material Management
SD: Sales & Distribution
HR: Human Resources

I've got to learn all this stuff on my own.

Just way too many categories.
SAP Technical Modules
1. ABAP: Advanced Business Applications Programming.
2. XI: Exchange Infrastructure.
3. Net Viewer
4. Basis
5. BIW: Business Information Warehousing
SAP FICO
SAP FICO stands for FI (Financial Accounting) and CO (Controlling). SAP FICO is the imp module of ERP and both Finance and Controlling Modules store the financial transactions data. The FI (Financial Accounting) records, collects, and processes financial transactions or information on a real time basis to provide the necessary inputs for external statutory reporting purposes. SAP CO plays an important role for the management decision purposes and for the internal reporting purposes.

FI
CO

Cost Element Accounting
Accounts Receivables

Accounts Payable
Profit Center Accounting
Asset Accounting
Internal Orders
Bank Accounting
Product Cost Controlling

I Googled the question "Are Lynda.com courses outdated?"  I got a pretty thoughtful reply from Reddit.  Here is some of that . . .
I get a free Lynda.com subscription through my school.  Lots of libraries give free subscriptions, too.  They have a ton of tutorials and they are high quality.  I've watched some of their Java tutorials, their UML [Unified Modeling Language] tutorials, and some OO [Object-Oriented] tutorials. They are good but don't go into as a textbook or some web source would.  Also, programming requires practice, so if you're watching videos you should also be writing some code on the side.
EDIT:  I'd say Lynda is good for supplementing your learning, but I wouldn't use it as a primary resource.
Interesting.

Want to practice coding?  Here is how:

I'm finally up to date with CodeAcademy courses and would like to practice my coding skills (both HTML/CSS and JavaScript). A license for Dreamweaver costs $600 dollars.  Windows or Linux or Mac?

Notepad++ is a good editor if you are doing this stuff by hand.  It does things like text highlighting and has plug-ins to do more advanced code manipulation.  What about coding exercises?

Another commentor suggested TextWrangler.

You don't need a program.  You can code all HTML, CSS, and JavaScript in a txt.  Then you rename it to .html extension and execute it with a browser.

You don’t want Dreamweaver at all. It won’t help with your coding skills. My favorite editor is jEdit, and download the JavaScript [here] plugin. You can build your website in a folder on your computer and find someone to host it. You’re quite right. Unless you practice, your coding skills will go. Someone suggested working on an open source project. Where? Who is open source? I’m not quite sure how you go about this.

Edit: I don’t know. It was just some general advice I received in the past but finding a particular project is going to make me dizzy. In the early days of Mozilla (Pre-Firefox) there was s alist of work that needed to be done. Regarding CodeAcademy, I wonder if you are aware that they’re re some courses that are endorsed but not official. (What the heck does that mean?) These will give you more practice.

Chami Kit.  Never heard of this either.

Sublime is also a good editor.

Code Pen, too, was recommended.  It has HTML, CSS, and JS. You can change the libraries/versions within each language.  All of your pens (projects) are shared unless you upgrade to Pro.

NETWORKING: VITAL TO YOUR CAREER
Building a network is essential to your career.  When you're starting out there's a lot of pressure from your peers to "not sell out."  I've experienced this in government institutions, like schools and unions.  "Ah, sell-out!" goes the corrective refrain even if you're asking for information or want to know procedures on something or even get approval.  James Altucher is pretty good.  The following video was originally posted at Gary North's site.

One site I visit said that successful networks come through competence, "Gain a reputation in competence in your field.  It is the only way to build a successful network."

A couple of the things to consider on networking:
1.  Hierarchy is slipping and giving way to networking.
2.  Here Altucher talks about the powerful effects of networking without explaining how he contacted, how much time it took to cultivate these relationships, who introduced him, and so forth.  Still worth a read.
3.  Okay, haven't thought of this one.  Volunteering is an effective way of networking.  Find an organization in your field--computing, automotive repair, etc.--and volunteer.  You can easily find  people there, and that's where you begin your network.  Now, he recommends signing up with CERT, which is a division of FEMA. Hmm. Can't say that this particularly settles me, but maybe if your goal is long-term network building, starting local is the way to go.

from SkillCrush . . . Be a Web Developer

Wondering if it’s worth getting into web development? Check out these numbers:
  • 121,000 people working as web developers right now in the U.S. alone
  • 20% growth predicted for the industry through 2020*
    *Bureau of Labor Statistics
  • 25,785 web developer job vacancies on Indeed
  • Average salary for a web developer of $87,000
Pretty impressive numbers! But are you thinking… “It’ll be YEARS before I, a tech newbie, can start to dream about a job like that!” Well, think again! You can learn the fundamentals of web development faster than you think. And once you do, you can start looking for junior web developer jobs.
“Junior web developer” is the term commonly used for people starting in the web development industry. But don’t let the tiny-sounding title fool you! Entry-level web developers bring home an average salary of $71,000 and there are 4,869 junior web developer job openings on Indeed as of April 2, 2015!
To get started as a web developer, of course you’ll need the key skills:
  • HTML
  • CSS
  • JavaScript
  • jQuery
(You can learn them—and much more more—in the Skillcrush Web Developer Career Blueprint. Hint, hint!)
Then, once you’re armed with those digital super powers, you should also look at getting to know these often-asked-for extras:
But is that enough?? When you’ve got the coding basics and some bonuses down, are you REALLY ready to start your job search? Maybe the idea of trying to get a web developer position probably makes youfeel like an imposter, and you’d be less nervous about a full root canal than an interview at a development agency.
It’s understandable. How can you feel confident in a job interview when you aren’t completely sure what all the job requirements actually are, or if you’re really and truly up to the job?
That’s perfectly normal at this point, but you don’t have to stay paralyzed in fear and miss out on your dream career.
You’ve already conquered the hardest part of the process by getting those must-have skills. But if you want to be sure you’re a TOP candidate, there’s plenty you can do to prepare.
Here are 12 ways to get your phone ringing or email box filling up with invites to interviews. Get started with them today. The sooner you do, the sooner you’ll be a happily-employed developer!

12 must-dos to land your first web developer job

1. BUILD YOUR OWN PORTFOLIO SITE

Creating your portfolio is JOB ONE if you want to get a developer job. As Skillcrush instructor and tech consultant Dee Kapila says, “When I hire junior devs, I look for an impressive portfolio.”
Your portfolio is the first thing potential employers will look at when considering you, so it needs to be a real reflection of your skills and yourself.
You can get ideas about what to put in your portfolio in step #2. But, before you can load up your portfolio, you need to code it and launch it on the wonderful World Wide Web.

2. FILL UP YOUR PORTFOLIO WITH PROJECTS

Now that you’ve got your own site built, it’s time to load it up with all the things. Of course you’ll include any work you’ve done for companies or clients (with their permission). But no need to worry if you haven’t done many—or any!—“real” projects.
Check out How to Build an Impressive Portfolio When You’re New to Tech to find out about the 14 things you can do to build a portfolio that will get you hired, even if you’ve only been coding for months.

3. DO FREELANCE PROJECTS

Speaking of projects, a great way to get some for your portfolio is to do some freelancing on the side. It’ll give you the chance to build your experience AND beef up your bank balance while helping you round out your portfolio.
The projects don’t have to be huge ones. You can offer, for example, to re-do the navigation for a local restaurant’s website or to create an HTML newsletter for a charity organization.
And you might consider doing some charity yourself—in the form of pro bono projects. You won’t be bringing home any bacon from them, but they’ll be a great addition to your portfolio, and you can actually make unpaid projects pay off for you in lots of ways that will boost your job search and your career.

4. PUT YOUR CODE ON GITHUB

Github is the industry-standard for version control, so many companies want to know that you already know how to use this tool. You can prove that AND show off your best code by creating your own Github account and using it as a repository for your projects.
After you get it set up, try to make regular contributions to your GitHub account to show that you’re consistently working on your skills. Even if they’re only for “imaginary” projects, keep your code clean and organized and include clear and concise README documentation so that employers know that you’ll be able to jump right in to collaboratively coding on their teams and projects.

5. CONTRIBUTE TO AN OPEN SOURCE PROJECT

If most of your coding so far has been for your classes, mock projects, or solo gigs, you can also increase your teamwork cred by getting involved in an open source project.
Open source is the term for source code that’s publicly available and can be modified by anyone. And there’s an incredible range of open source projects, including famous ones like Ruby on Rails, Linux, MySQL, and loads of JavaScript frameworks.
Getting involved in open source projects will:
  • Strengthen your development skills
  • Get you hands-on experience working on teams and projects
  • Let you meet and network with other developers
You can look for open source projects of all kinds and sizes on Explore GitHub. And once you find a project you’re interested in and have explored it more, don’t be afraid to jump in and help! Some easy first steps you can take are reporting bugs, helping prioritize issues, beta testing, working on the project’s website, or improving documentation.

6. PARTICIPATE IN A HACKATHON

You can’t turn around nowadays without bumping into a hackathon! And they’re a fun and exciting way to get to know people with the same interests, tackle interesting problems, test your coding skills, learn from others, and maybe win prizes like gift cards, gear, trips, and CASH! And, oh yeah. There’s that thing of making you look good when you’re looking for developer jobs…At a hackathon, you’ll end up coding on a team, and if you’ve been learning to code on your own, proving you can hack it (get it?) with a team of coders makes you a lot more appealing to hiring managers at web development agencies.
To find hackathons near you or online, try searching sites like:
And remember to keep your eye out at the event for sponsors and recruiters. Many a web developer has gotten noticed at a hackathon and offered a job right on the spot!

7. MEET TECHIES ONLINE AND IRL

In addition to fame and glory, hopefully you’ll also get contacts in tech from those hackathons, but don’t let the networking stop there. Keep reaching out and learning more about the industry by meeting people online and in person.
The easiest way to do this is through tech meetup groups. Almost everyone city has them, and, if yours doesn’t, you can set up your own. Just pick the focus, find a place (even a coffee shop or local park will do!), and spread the word.
Or, if you’re really not in a location that lets you get together with other techies, look for communities online. Answer questions on Stack Overflow, comment on Reddit threads related to development, or help out on the WordPress.org forum.
Whether you meet in person or on the Internet, you’ll be expanding your horizons and getting to know people who can turn out to be your future co-workers or superiors.

8. FOLLOW INDUSTRY NEWS

To keep from freezing up right at the small talk phase when you meet all those techies OR during your first web developer job interview (!), start keeping up with what’s happening in tech.
You don’t need to be an expert on every story or topic out there. Just get to know what’s hot and what’s happening. And that’s beyond easy to do: You can read blogs or tech news sites over breakfast, listen to podcasts when you’re walking your dog, or scan Twitter lists while you’re waiting in line at the store.

9. LEARN MORE!

Besides keeping up on the news, you should also keep up with learning new skills and tools of the trade. As a web developer, knowing these will make you that much more in-demand.
A few that are most requested are:
  • CSS preprocessors like Sass or Less
  • Frameworks like Backbone.js, Angular.js, or Node.js, etc. or Ruby on Rails
  • A CMS (Content Management System) like WordPress
And you can explore the wonderful world of Ruby in a Skillcrush Ruby on Rails Developer Blueprint or try the WordPress Developer Blueprint to learn the world’s most popular CMS.

10. REFINE YOUR RESUME

Even though your portfolio is where you’ll show off your skills, a lot of companies still ask for resumesand use them to “weed out” candidates. That means yours needs to be as polished and professional as your portfolio if you want to get noticed AND hired.
Of course you’ll want to update the information on your resume to fit web development. Also make sure you highlight your core skills, play up any tech-related experience, and give specific details to prove your achievements and strengths.
Try out the tips in “15 Steps for Updating Your Resume” to give it a good general refresh.

11. CHECK OUT THE JOBS

Now that you’ve made the extra effort with these must-haves, it’s time to dive into some actual job listings. Start by just searching for “junior web developer” and not worrying about the company or the location. The idea is for you to see what employers are looking for and what kind of options are available for you in general.
Keep in mind that job ads tend to list more (sometimes WAY more!) requirements and “nice-to-haves” than are really expected from candidates. Never hurts to ask, right?! Don’t let this discourage you though. If you can handle most of what they’re looking for, you’ll probably be at least considered for the role.
Once you’ve gotten a feel for what’s out there, go ahead and send out your resume for some jobs you’re really interested in. Be realistic but don’t be shy. Nobody’s going to come knocking on your door with a web dev position in hand. You have to put yourself out there.
And don’t forget the good ol’ grapevine! Let all your friends, family, neighbors, and—of course—hackathon/meet-up/online friends know that you’re actively looking. You never know who has a friend who has a friend who knows just the job for you.

12. INTERVIEW FOR A JOB – EVEN IF YOU’RE NOT SURE YOU’RE READY

When that shiny happy moment happens and you’re asked to go for an interview, go for it! THIS is the moment you’ve been waiting for! You can never be 100% prepared for any interview, but you know how hard you’ve worked for this so show them what you’ve got.
In Dee’s case, for example, she asks junior dev candidates to “whiteboard wireframes as part of the interview to see how they dealt with pressure and to gauge their thought process.”
And Skillcrush lead developer Emily Davis looks for “a candidate’s ability to break down a problem into small pieces that can be worked through step-by-step. This means she is likely able to identify the root cause of an issue and work from there, rather than having little or no idea where to start.”

No matter how it goes, you’ll have survived that nerve-wracking first interview, which will make the next one that much easier. Plus you’ll have a much better idea of what future interviews will be like and what you need to work on for them. And maybe not surprisingly, there’s no better preparation for a job interview than a job interview. In no time at all, instead of just applying for junior web developer positions, you’ll be accepting your first one!

1.  Find out what is expected from different with WhatDoesADo

Thursday, November 26, 2015, Happy Thanksgiving!!!

My situation is different from most, so using a "standard" resume can be problematic. I sold my business in my early 30s and was then financially independent. I could work, or not, depending upon what was appealing to me. I love to work, so I fully expected to work. I had no interest in laying around doing nothing.

Calls came in for me to assist old friends on a variety of projects. While I didn't realize it at the time, it became what we call contract work. It evolved that I worked under these three casual rules.
1. The job had to be about something where I was able to learn something new.
2. Generally the job had to pay double or triple normal what I was worth. That way I could work only part of the year and still receive full compensation. There was no hard and fast rule about this, as one job paid nothing at all and I loved it. Contract work generally pays quite well due to its temporary nature.
3. They had to promise to fire me when the job was done. I wasn't looking for a real job.

This made a lot of holes in my work history. A resume that was chronological looked silly. One community resume resource person looked at my history and suggested that I didn't want, or need, a standard resume. I could just list my accomplishments. This has worked out very well for me, far better than a standard resume ever would.

If a prospective employer is looking for a full time stable (slave) employee, I am not it. I have never even been asked to an interview under these conditions.

Much of the contract world is intended to test a potential employee without the risk of getting stuck with a dud worker. I make it clear, right up front, that I have no interest. My odd resume and attitude results in the interviewer wanting to find out more about how a person arrived at such a position.

I explain that I sold my successful business and now work because I want to work. In essence, I challenge them to appeal to me in order to get me. I don't need them, but they may need me. Some few have no interest and it ends there. Most find my attitude unusual and few interviews go along the normal route. Several times I have been offered a position unlike the one under consideration. Sometimes I get referred to a friend of the interviewer as better suited for something else. My network has just expanded.

When the subject of pay is concerned, I avoid it by saying that I fully expect to be compensated within the parameters of the industry. You might think that since I don't "have to have the money" that I would be offered the low end of the range. The opposite is true, I am offered at the higher end every time.

This is just a hint of my unusual methods, but it has worked for me very well in exceeding my expectations. I have always been able to save at least 1/2 of my take home pay and a couple of times 100%. I have now traveled to 5 continents, including Antarctica, and been paid for it. I am still trying to get paid to go to my only remaining state, Alaska. I may fail.

How has this worked for me? I am now 70 and I still get jobs. How do I find them, the phone rings. Only once in those 37 years did I go looking. I was underfoot for my wife and bored, possibly with low level depression. She told me to go back to work. I made a couple of phone calls and was on a plane the next day to my next contract job. Your network is everything.

Most of all, I am free and simply can't understand why so many have gone into debt and became voluntary slaves. The last job where I had to have the money was working for my father and I was 22. That was it, I vowed "Never again."

If you allow yourself to become free, your life will change in ways that you could never imagine. It may not be all good.

Write Copy for Fortune 500 Companies, Bob Bly, $29.
Dear Direct Response Letter Subscriber:

Which copywriting clients have the deepest pockets -- and pay
the biggest fees to their freelancers?
www.fortune500copy.com

The Fortune 500, of course. These billion-dollar conglomerates
pay higher fees -- and have more repeat assignments to give you --
than other copywriting clients.

Surprisingly, it is not at all difficult to hook these
conglomerates as clients. In my first year as a copywriter, with
almost no experience under my belt, I wrote for at least 3
Fortune 500 companies.

To discover how you can quickly and easily add big Fortune 500
companies to your client roster, just click below now:

Sincerely,
Bob Bly

P.S. Another advantage of having big corporations as copywriting
clients is that they are loyal.

Direct marketers are constantly trying different copywriters to
see if they can beat their control.

Fortune 500 clients, on the other hand, tend to think of you as
"their" copywriter ... and won't flit around looking to test other
writers.

The result: a steady stream of repeat assignments from the same
group of corporate clients:

Need a Raise in 2015? Try Changing Jobs

Kansas City Fed economist José Mustre-del-Río writes in a new research paper:
Unlike wages of stayers, wages of switchers are much more cyclically sensitive, as contracts signed with new employers are more likely to reflect current economic conditions. We find that switchers’ wage growth has been quite strong the past several quarters as the labor market continues to tighten...As the labor market continues to tighten and turnover continues to rise, these trends should become more broad-based.
Job switchers’ average wage growth rose from around 4.3% per quarter in the first quarter of 2013 to 5.6% in the third quarter of 2014, the study found.

Note: This makes common sense. If someone has a job, it will generally take a significantly higher salary to cause him to switch. And, during the manipulated boom period, such as we have now, the Fed is pumping money into new sectors that have the funds to bid employees away from old sectors.

When branding yourself for the job you want, "your emphasis is not on the job titles you’ve held or the tasks you completed. Rather, you’ll highlight the problems you’ve solved for your past employers."

"Forget your skills – no one cares. Tell us what problems you solve, instead."

Obtaining information on companies, use LinkedIn and Glassdoor. Glassdoor is primarily a jobs board, but it also has helpful sections, "Companies & Reviews," "Interviews," "Salaries," and "Jobs."  This is part of that job search that so many folks talk about.

INTERVIEW STRATEGIES
Wednesday, November 19, 2014

This is the best advice I'd ever heard of on what to say in an interview:

A job interview is not a test on what you know about a company, but rather a sales presentation on what you can bring to the company. As an employer, I don't care about what you know about my company -- if I hire you, I'll teach you everything you need to know that's specific to our firm.

What I do care about is what you can bring to our firm that will help us achieve our goals (make money, do good in the world, etc.). So your presentation in your interview should revolve around the skills and attributes that you bring to the table that would benefit the company.

If you are looking for questions to ask when the interviewer inevitably says "Do you have any questions for me?" -- as you don't want to hear crickets at this point -- my favorite question is "How does someone be successful here at XYZ company?" because 9 times out of 10, the interviewer will start talking about what has made them successful, and as a result of your questions, you will have made the interviewer feel good about himself/herself and those positive vibes will be favorable to you.

THANK-YOU NOTES
Thank you notes are essential.  They demonstrate courtesy and follow-up.  Also, if you're applying for a customer service position, then sending a thank you note becomes more like evidence of your ability to provide satisfactory service.

Nick Corcodilos suggests inserting a cut-out newspaper article, the kind that Steve Hardy produces daily, on a topic that was discussed in the interview or something relevant to the company.  And then to write at the top of the article: "TO: ______________; FROM _______________."  And to also include a relevant comment in the margin on a point discussed in the interview.  This to me is a lot of work.  But I think that he's right that the Thank you note and the article insert will occupy more time and space on the manager's desk than other thank you notes.  And since thank you notes are the most recent reminder of the candidate, it makes sense that you want it to be unique.  I will try that next time.

INTERVIEW FOLLOW-UP
Jot down what you think went well, what you feel you should have covered more – and most importantly, any useful nugget of information you may have picked up about the role or company.

I would then send an email the next morning – keep it fairly brief, no more than 5 or 6 lines.

Firstly you should thank the hiring manager for their time as this shows good manners. Then talk about a specific point they may have mentioned. Maybe they said they were planning to expand overseas in the near future. Whatever it is, by briefly touching upon it, you are showing that you listened and are genuinely interested in the company.

DEVELOP A BETTER WORK ETHIC
Gary North - October 10, 2014

This was posted this week.

How does one develop strong work ethics? Please share some personal tips and tricks.

TIME PERSPECTIVE
It begins with time perspective. From what we can see, although we are not able to see very much, this develops sometime around the age of four. About a third of the children tested in the famous marshmallow experiment had the ability to defer gratification. There are several videos on this, and you can search "marshmallow experiment" on YouTube.

As part of the experiment, there were follow-up studies. It turned out that those students who had high future-orientation did better in almost every area of life at the age of 18 than those students who had not demonstrated the ability to defer gratification at the age of four or five.

This does not mean that a particular outlook cannot be taught and reinforced within the family environment or in an educational environment. We know that these tendencies can be reinforced. The question is this: Is there any systematic program that will move a present-oriented person into the category of future-oriented? The answer is yes. There is a one-word answer: marriage.

In studies of male welfare dependency, there are four steps that a man can take that generally keep him from winding up on the welfare rolls, or staying on the welfare rolls. These are the four steps: graduate from high school, get a job, get married, and stay married. A man who will do these four things is far less likely to wind up permanently on the welfare rolls than a man who does none of them.

The problem is this: it takes a certain attitude, especially a sense of personal responsibility, to take all four steps. The steps can be seen as techniques, but these techniques are avoided by large numbers of men in inner cities in the United States and Great Britain. Basically, an abnormally high percentage of black males will not take these four steps. If we look at the inner cities where there is competition between Blacks and Latinos, older Latinos drop out of high school at twice the rate of older Blacks, but they get married, and they stay married. Year-by-year, Latinos replace Blacks as property owners in the inner cities. This is especially true in what used to be called South Central Los Angeles: "Watts." It is almost a case study of what has happened nationally.

The earlier that children are taught to establish goals, and then work on a personal plan of action to reach these goals, the sooner the child will enter into the responsibilities of adulthood. This is why homework assignments in formal education are important in the development of a productive work ethic. Every society has a program of training children, and every society has some form of initiation that marks the transition from childhood to adulthood. In the United States, this usually is high school graduation. This is why high school graduation is a major liturgical event in Western society. This is also why the 50th reunion of a high school class is one of the last formal celebrations that Americans go through. Some Americans go through a similar celebration four years later: the 50th college reunion. But, of course, fewer Americans go through this than who attend the 50th high school reunion.

All of this has to do with time. Time perspective is crucial. The other factors, such as marriage and having children, are institutional reinforcements of time perspective.

Edward Banfield defined economic class in terms of time perspective. Future-oriented people are upper class. (The Unheavenly City.)

HABITS
I cannot identify the transition in my own life. I was watching the latest installment of NCIS this week. There was a scene in which one of the regular stars of the show, the character "Ducky," who spends his life studying dead bodies, reminisces about his graduation from medical school. It was in Great Britain. He went to the equivalent of a disco center, although in those days they were not called discos. As I watched this, for the first time in my life, I realized that I had never gone to a place like that. I went to a few performances of various bluegrass groups and folk artists, but I never went to anything comparable to a singles bar or a disco. This had never occurred to me before. It was something of a personal revelation. I thought back, and I had no reminiscences of anything like this.

I realized in that moment of truth that I have spent my life marshaling footnotes. For as long as I can remember, that has been the overwhelming focus of my life. I have been writing term papers on a regular basis since the age of 13. I write the equivalent of a high school weekly essay or even a monthly essay, four times a day, six days a week, plus the equivalent of a couple of brief weekly essays every day. Then I produce at least two video lessons that are at least 25 minutes long. This means outlining the lesson, recording the lesson, and editing it. I realized that I have been doing something comparable, though with less output per day, since the age of 13. I knew that, but I had not recognized the price: no discos.

We get into habitual patterns. I realize that the pattern that I have set for myself at my age is abnormal. I have certain things I want to finish. I have certain things I want to leave as a legacy. My workload reflects this. It is not normal. But my point is this: this pattern of behavior begins very young.

The advantage that I have in my writing is that I have a daily deadline for at least half a dozen projects. Every day, I have to perform. This gets habitual. If you break down your various tasks into bite-size portions, and you have a time schedule laid out for the achievement of steps along each path, you will develop the habits that are generally described as the work ethic. This is sometimes called Protestant work ethic. It is certainly the work ethic that prevails in Japan. It is not the work ethic that prevails in sub-Saharan Africa.
In extreme cases, this is called workaholism. The question is this: Is the behavior the result of a process of sequential task-setting, or is the task-setting the result of the psychological condition? I do not know the answer.

VOLUNTEERING
The best way to develop this work ethic is to take on voluntary tasks beyond what is assigned to you in school or on the job. The more tasks you take on, and the more tasks with deadlines, the more rapidly you will develop a sustainable work ethic. Volunteer for projects.

In high school, I had the usual academic tasks. I got A's and B's. At the age of 14, I got a job in which I had to work 20 hours a week. I also performed in the junior and senior plays. I was student body president in the second half of my senior year. I was a sports photographer in the last two years of high school. In my senior year, I organized the annual regional convention of the California Scholarship Federation. I did not have to do any of this. By age 14, my behavior was set in psychological concrete.

I did not watch a lot of television. Except for the Western TV show Maverick and The Steve Allen Show, I have no memory of what I watched in high school. If it had not been for the weekly "man in the street" segment, I doubt that I would remember anything on The Steve Allen Show. Whenever I watched, most of it made no impression on me.

Basically, I loaded myself down with extracurricular activities. These involved public speaking. This included selling records at a record store. I had to learn how to talk. School taught me how to write. These are the only two skills I have developed ever since. I am probably not a better speaker today than I was at the age of 17. I am a better writer. That took longer. By age 23, I could write for the general public. I began with book reviews in a local newspaper.

CONCLUSION
There is a saying, "If you want to get something done, assign it to a busy person." You might think that it would be easier to assign the task to somebody with a lot of time on his hands. But people with a lot of time on their hands have specialized in avoiding tasks. It is not a good idea to assign any task to someone who has a lot of time on his hands.

To gain the Protestant work ethic, volunteer for more assignments. Volunteer for assignments that are meaningful, even though you do not make any money at them. You will find that the habits you develop by doing this will eventually make you more money. They will spill over into your job
